Hi all I'm in the hunt for a new set of road wheels.
I weigh around 85kg, have around $1200 to spend, I'm after clinchers, not full carbon, rim break type. What are the thoughts. I climb a lot of hills, previous set came with bike new have around 40,000km on them are shimano Rs 80s.
The frame on my trusty giant failed and I got a new frame under warranty, thought a new set of wheels and I've got a new bike!

If you had no spoke breakages with the RS80s then I'd suggest Dura Ace C24s which are pretty light and can be bought for around a $1,000 or less.

I've bought two pairs of RS81's within the last 6-8 months.
Wiggle and Merlin supplied them at a very reasonable price of about $540.00/pair. I think the price has risen a bit since then.
If they last as well as my old RS80's, about 30,000km's, I'll be very happy.
The 81's feel every bit as light, fast accelerators and great climbers as the oldies. In your case they aren't really an upgrade but they seem to be very good wheels for the price.
I like the "digital" cup and cone adjustment and locking system. Much easier to preload than the conventional cone and locknut setup. I'm a big fan of Shimano cup and cones.
One of the front wheels had a slight (less than 1mm) wobble. Easily trued-up, the first time I've dared to fiddle with spokes.
I also considered a set of very light aluminium wheels from Greg at TWE. About $800.00, shallow profile, they weigh about 1250 grams. He gave me a verbal guarantee of at least 35,000km lifespan.
I start racing in 7 weeks time and am still thinking of buying the TWE hoops.
Then again the very similar DA C24's are nice wheels.
I love the sensation of rapid acceleration on lightweight wheels and a good frame. I'll take that and easier climbing than heavier deep rimmed but faster modern wheels any day.

Fulcrum racing zeros or Campy Shamals are still my favourite wheelsets.

I picked up another set of zero's c17 at PBK for $830 a few weeks back on sale with a 10% code. They are not on sale at the moment but they generally do have sales every few weeks there with free shipping.

I have all sorts of wheelsets, handmades, DA c24 (7900 and 9000 series I actually like the 7900 better than the 9000), RS81s, swiss side, Zondas and have had a lot of others up and down the Fulcrum/Campy series but my two sets Shamals and two sets of zero's I think are my best overall.

The HED Ardennes + series of wheels are only slightly heavier than the C24s. The HED is all alloy wheel with a wide rim, where the C24 is still quite narrow.
The C24 hubs are the main difference, so it comes down to the ride feel.
The wider rim means a lower tyre pressure, and a less harsh ride.

The C24 has been prone to delamination, which is covered under warranty but shimano, but it is a pain when it happens as your brakes will start to pulse like crazy.

My personal preference is the HED rims...loves them so much I built my own wheels using the HED Belgium+ rims (same rim as the Ardennes) and laced them onto DT240s hubs. That cost me a few dollars over $1000 (build cost was free obviously)

You will prob find most places starting to stock only the new R9100 DA c24s now with the 9000 disappearing fast.

Underneath the carbon is an aluminium layer.
Presumably when the carbon delaminates the wheel runs out of true and the brakes pulsate on a wobbly brake track.

That’s pretty much it. I have had a set of C50’s delaminate, and pull the whole alloy rim out of shake. Pulsing brakes, the whole works. Shimano replaced the set under warranty. Bike shop said they are constantly sending these wheels back for warranty.
Had a club mate with the C24s where exactly the same thing happened, and I have seen enough posts from others to know it’s a fairly common issue.
So, now I stay away from hybrid wheels like this. Either go full alloy or go full carbon.

Never had any of my 6 or so pairs of C24s delaminate, or any of my friend's C24s.
The brake track does seem a bit on the soft side and wears IMO prematurely, especially if riding regularly in wet weather.

So what's the idea of laminating carbon over alloy?

Nice choice! Don't be alarmed if there is no freehub noise at first; the Zero's are generally really well greased and takes a few weeks to wear in. Judge them after about a month or so (or about 500kms).

+1 on watching out for rim wear on the C24's. They make the rim walls thinner to save weight so they just don't have as much meat in them as some, given you've put some fair km on your current wheels I'd be hesitant

That's why I didn't go the c24s. I do a lot of climbing, so hence a lot of descending
