Cheers for the photos.

Yes I try to get a look at the progress when I drive my car to work.

The only problem is I do think it is still a while off. So we have to all be patient.

There is now a map on the Main Roads website (scroll down to 'Project Map')
https://www.mainroads.wa.gov.au/Buildin ... grade.aspx

It shows the PSP on the northern/western side of Roe Hwy and it looks like no bridge at Orrong Rd unfortunately.

Without any actual knowledge of the project, I suspect that the PSP will use part of the existing Roe Hwy bridge over the rail line, rather than a new bridge being built.
Confusingly written media release today:
https://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au/P ... twork.aspx
Transport Minister Dean Nalder said work would start soon on the Liberal National Government's new $5 million pathway, which would include a 120m bridge overpass at the Roe Highway and Orrong Road interchange.

"This new pathway will complete the final and missing link in the 22km cycling and pedestrian route along Roe Highway, between the Kwinana Freeway and Berkshire Road in Forrestfield," Mr Nalder said.
Sounds like the project scope has been expanded to include an overpass at Orrong Rd for the PSP, avoiding the signalised crossings.
Detailed design of the PSP project is underway. Work is expected to start by the end of the year and completion is anticipated in March 2017.

Yeah true Troy. I'm at Bluescope which is right where the Tonkin overpass goes over Abernethy Rd. Once it is all ready I will be dropped almost at my doorstep. Been here nearly 10 years hoping this would happen.

I copped a detour this morning when almost at Orrong Rd. Ended up going through Kewdale and the rail terminal road. Maybe they are beginning to get that segment sorted to bridge Orrong Rd.

How well is Tonkin signposted now for non-cycling sections?

"Completion planned for March 2017" - looking at Nearmap, there's not much left to do!

When they did the Gribble Road bypass in Gwelup the path was opened a couple of weeks after it had been laid down, due to the lighting needing to be completed.

Given the lack of progress on the bridge, March is a bit fanciful. But the path itself is desperately close!

It's definitely a snails pace at the moment. I work not far from where that red line ends. At the moment I go on a big detour to get on to Abernethy Rd.

I was hoping to go exploring on the weekend - GE Highway from the city, Tonkin, Roe, Kwinana FWY back to the city. Maybe I'll just take the 29er out instead and ride through the dirt to connect those sections :)

The gate was open at the north end last Saturday and I could have ridden over the bridge if I wanted - the construction workers had all knocked off. The unsealed bit has been pretty well compacted and you could take a road bike over it without much problem.

I always feel obliged to warn people about busses on the section of GE Hwy with the adjacent bike/bus lanes. The busses block the bike lane when stopping at the bus stops and I have seen a couple of instances of aggressive bus driving where the busses push out into overtaking cyclists to try and stop the cyclists getting in front of the stopped bus.

The busses are meant to give you a minimum of 5 seconds between indicating and moving out into traffic but in these cases they stick on the indicator and immediately move despite the cyclists being halfway along the length of the bus.

Of course it is all a matter of timing and most times you ride along there you won't have to choose between overtaking a bus and stopping behind it.

Perhaps we could be crossing at ground level until they can get the bridge over Orrong in place.

Agreed. While I've not seen the aggressive driving, it's always uncomfortable to be approaching a bus on GEH. I find the best option is just to wait for them, then overtake when they reach the next stop.

Hi All,
Anyone have any update on the bridge and path upgrades on the Roe near Tonkin?
It seems to have gone quiet and I don't go that way often (bike or car), so I haven't been able to see progress.

cheers

Most of the earthworks and walls for the bridge appear pretty advanced. The first concrete plinth for the bridge had the rebar erected over the last few days and the formwork was in place last night. May have had the concrete poured but not sure.

Thanks Mozzie - much appreciated.
After the post, I went to the MRWA site and noticed the detours last weekend - so that's what it was.

cheers

i drove past an hour or so ago and the concrete has not been poured. The support column steel reinforcing is up, but the formwork is only half done. At least progress is happening though.

I think we might be waiting on the orrong rd bridge. They are still working on earthworks for that.

Just a head-up if you're using the detour limestone/rubber/sand shared path. With the regular rain and sunny days the double-G's are sprouting like crazy along the path.

Orrong rd bridge
Western side earthworks are still in progress.
Middle, appears footings are in place?
Eastern side all I can see from Orrong rd is that it looks ready to receive the bridge.

Crane is now there, all 3 supports for the bridge are up. No sign of bridge however
