We do ride on the road (shoulder only) and use the dedicated bike lane as well. People with flat tyres today were spread out along the Boulevard.biker jk wrote:Why don't you ride on the road? Spoke to some other riders and was told at leat another 4 at the time we were there.

Agreed - there is no requirement to ride on the shoulder, and that is where there are going to be more loose tacks.kb wrote:On the road right of the white line is best.
If you ride to the right of the white line, any tacks that have been dropped will likely be picked up by the tyres of the cars using the road. This is my standard practise for the Boulie now.

On the right of the white line is best tack-wise but prefer riding on the shoulder for 2 reasons, nezumi wrote:Agreed - there is no requirement to ride on the shoulder, and that is where there are going to be more loose tacks.kb wrote:On the road right of the white line is best.

1 - It's safer to stay clear of cars, I would think so anyway......
2 - Don't want to give drivers a reason to dislike cyclists, it's possible they would......
Having a day off this Thursday so hopefully will be a tack-free day

Your choice but I would ride on the road to avoid punctures. You said there's nothing you can do about the tacks but there is something you can do about where to ride to avoid them.megalo wrote:On the right of the white line is best tack-wise but prefer riding on the shoulder for 2 reasons, nezumi wrote:Agreed - there is no requirement to ride on the shoulder, and that is where there are going to be more loose tacks.kb wrote:On the road right of the white line is best.

Has the added bonus of potentially annoying the deranged idiot or idiots who are dropping the tacks. If it is a driver or motorcyclist who is doing this because they wish to rid the Boulie of cyclists getting in their way whilst they take the corners at speed, they will realise dropping tacks is counterproductive to their causenezumi wrote:Agreed - there is no requirement to ride on the shoulder, and that is where there are going to be more loose tacks.kb wrote:On the road right of the white line is best.

Indeed, that is the main reason why I have been suggesting that cyclists ride on the road through there. If all cyclists did it and motorists were inconvenienced then I'm sure there would be a great deal of pressure brought upon the perpetrator to stop dropping the tacks.warthog1 wrote:Has the added bonus of potentially annoying the deranged idiot or idiots who are dropping the tacks. the alternative suspect is a commuter - a lot of drivers jump off Chandler Hwy and use the Boullie to access Johnson St.Derny Driver wrote:Its obviously a resident.

if the cops have a theory of when its being done then by all means surveillance is a good idea but having CCTV all along the Boulevard isn'tbiker jk wrote:Some controversial comments to say the least. What about CCTV cameras?

You can still place temporary CCTV systems to record movement, and the fact that someone has already done the ground work for approximately when and where would make it easier to co-ordinate.Strydz wrote:if the cops have a theory of when its being done then by all means surveillance is a good idea but having CCTV all along the Boulevard isn'tbiker jk wrote:Some controversial comments to say the least. I just wonder how much it would cost the local council to run those miniature street sweeps once a week up and down the bollie.

This helps to get the message out there and may reduce potential tensions between cyclists and motorists.

VicRoads run street sweepers down there a couple of times a month. It costs about $2000 a pop because they transport them from Dandenong.marty_one wrote:Strydz wrote:if the cops have a theory of when its being done then by all means surveillance is a good idea but having CCTV all along the Boulevard isn'tbiker jk wrote:Some controversial comments to say the least. Saw 2 other fixing flats as well, with a third riding past mentioned she'd just fixed one herself.

As others have written on this and other fora, ride outside the white line and you'll have a much better chance of riding tack free.
